Each year, Larimer County presents awards to two outstanding seniors for their efforts and achievements as volunteers. In April, the County presented Stan Ulrich Awards to Marie Vigil for her senior caregiving efforts and Elnora McCloughan as a senior volunteer.
County Commissioners Steve Johnson and Tom Donnelly along with Human Services Executive Director Laura Walker and Program Manager Lynda Meyer presented the awards to the two outstanding recipients.
Marie Vigil has cared for her husband since 2012, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and a stroke and heart attack survivor until his recent passing. She helped with caregiving for her neighbor’s husband, who had Supra Nuclear Palsy for several years.
She also cared for her mother at the Berthoud Living Center, where she made a continuous presence during her husband’s last months there. She continues her volunteer caregiving, helping others in her circle of friends. Armed with the county’s ‘Answers on Aging’ Resource Guide, Marie spreads the word about this valuable resource to anyone needing senior resources.
Elnora McCloughan began her senior advocacy in 1986 and also operated the senior meal program at the old Berthoud train depot. She has been involved with United Way, was past president of the Board of Directors for the House of Neighborly Service, and a past member of the RSVP Advisory Council. In 1997, she received AARP’s special citation for Outstanding Service.
In 1989 as part of Berthoud Golden Links, Elnora joined forces with the Berthoud Fire Protection District to expand the existing fire station and helped build a community center and senior center. In 1992, Elnora began a transportation program for 15 years. In 1996, she became a full time volunteer for Berthoud seniors and ran the meal program, senior center and transportation program. She continues today as volunteer leader at the Berthoud Senior Center and continues to oversee monthly events and coordinating with AARP for senior driver training. Congratulations to both outstanding volunteers!
