Kick into September

School is back in session, our days occasionally contain a hint of fall in the air, and local entities kick off their seasons. From the arts to athletics, September offers many area opportunities.

In the arts community, the Boulder Philharmonic presents its opening night concert, “Reflections: The Spirit of Boulder,” Sunday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in Macky Auditorium. Two guest artist – Charles Wetherbee (violin) and Gabriela Montero (piano) – are featured during this program of music by Ravel, Fujiwara and Rachmaninoff.

On the last Sunday of the month, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. also in Macky Auditorium, CU Presents its opening Artist Series season with Twyla Tharp Dance. In returning to Boulder for the first time since 1979, this group celebrates the 50th anniversary of its choreographer’s stellar career. Featured works include those set to Bach, Henry Butler, Steven Bernstein and John Zorn.

A local chamber music favorite – the Takács Quartet – opens its season on Sunday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. repeat performance on Monday, September 21. Both performances take place in the College of Music’s Grusin Hall.

This year the Cleveland Orchestra is in residency at the College of Music from Monday, September 21 through Wednesday, September 25. That Wednesday, a rehearsal open to the public is scheduled for noon in room E-160.

Fans of Faculty Tuesdays, will find those beginning again after the opener, “Musical Postcards” on August 28. Toward the end of the month, the CU Symphony Orchestra makes its debut performance on Friday, September 25 in Macky Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The Dairy Center for the Arts, Boulder History Museum, area art museums such as BMoCA and the Fiske Planetarium provide other cultural opportunities. Calendar information is available on line or by contacting them directly.

Pearl Street StampedeShould the lure of fall sports intrigue, Friday evening’s September 11 Stampede on the Pearl Street Mall offers an opportunity for hearing CU’s Marching Band, and seeing the cheer squad along with several players and coaches before the first home game against U Mass, Saturday, September 12. The Buffs hold their next home game on Saturday, September 26 against Nicholls State.
