On Saturday, March 10, 2018, 150 friends and family convened at the Del Mar Senior Center to celebrate the 100th birthday for the city’s newest centenarian, Ms. Roberta Thomas. Born on March 8, 1918 in Cancienne, Louisiana, Ms. Roberta is the eldest child of 3 brothers (now deceased) and one sister, Bessie Jones. Ms. Roberta later relocated to Shreveport until moving to Colorado in 1995 to be closer to baby sister, Bessie. Her work history includes working in the city’s pecan factory until it closed, and later as a housekeeper.
This birthday party was hosted by Aurora Police Officer James Seneca. Officer Seneca, a member of the Aurora Police Department Special Victims Unit provided a wonderful luncheon meal of baked chicken, pulled pork, baked beans and birthday cake.
Opening prayer was offered by Minister Mattie Guffie; Carol Gallaway serenaded Ms. Roberta with a birthday song. Guests offered special birthday accolades to the local celebrity. Growing up in Louisiana, Ms. Roberta remembers rushing home from school daily to help her mom cook, clean and babysit younger siblings. Ms. Roberta has worked at the Del Mar Senior Center for 17 years. Her favorite foods include chicken wings, collard and mustard greens, cornbread, peach cobbler & sweet potato pie; she also enjoys watching television. She received flowers, gifts from the heart, hugs and heartfelt prayers. Special guests included: Photographer Ronnie Wilson; Brianna White; Wayne Jones; Monica Jones; Rev. William T. Golson; and members and pastor, Rev. Dr. Shannon J. Warner of Ms. Roberta & Bessie’s home church, True Light Baptist Church.
