On September 30, Dr. Cameron Camp, an internationally known research scientist in the field of gerontology, will be in Greeley to review WindSong at Northridge for credentialing in the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® approach to dementia care.
Dr. Camp saw commonalities between Maria Montessori’s method of teaching children and his research in dementia intervention. His research has shown that a retooling of Montessori’s concepts can benefit people in all stages of their lives, even those with serious cognitive impairment.
In the 25 years since his research began, Dr. Camp has lectured and trained in Asia, Australia, Europe, and throughout North America. His writings have been translated into many different languages. He recently served as President of the Division of Adult Development and Aging of the American Psychological Association.
The practical application of Dr. Camp’s principles affirms that persons with dementia can be led by building experiences and external cues to help them “remember” in a way. Even new learning can occur over time. With the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® approach, individuals with dementia are able to retain their dignity and independence. Through the use of the Montessori methods, WindSong has created a community that is centered on residents’ needs and previous lifestyles. They work to capitalize on each individual’s strengths and utilize those strengths together to create an environment where a community of people with dementia can once again be active participants in their own lives. Rather than negatively restricting what dementia residents can do, at WindSong, they seek for their residents the highest level of independence possible.
WindSong at Northridge presents a free session, open to the public with Dr. Camp on October 2nd at 6:00 pm located at our community 7010 West 8th Street. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP at 970-449-7199 or at dsuniga@windsongmemorycare.com.
