Pet Family Planning

Tax season approaches . Thoughts of how we manage our resources while paying the government our share may not trigger thoughts of your pet. As household items, okay family members, our pets require resources. Planning for basic necessities is helpful when planning your budgets. Planning for emergencies is also critical.

Our pets need food, water and something to hold it in. Prices of food can vary. Be sure to look for a well-respected brand with AAFCO feeding trials and dedicated processing factories. Expensive is not always better and the grain free and boutique diets may contribute to heart disease in dogs. The diet you choose can also be used as treats to help control extra calories. If you prefer ‘dental’ treats, look for ones with the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) approval.

In addition to a good quality food, pets benefit from regular veterinary care. Annual check-ups are important and your veterinarian will recommend preventive care like vaccines and parasite control. For an older pet, twice yearly visits can help pick up changes you may not have noticed at home. Partner with your veterinarian to develop a plan that will keep your pet heathy and works for your budget. More and more pet owners are investing in pet health insurance for preventive care and for emergencies. It can be a life-saving investment.

What will happen to your pet if you have an emergency? Identify who will care for your pet if you cannot. Draw up detailed instructions, particularly if your pet as specific needs or medications. Include diet and regular routines. Consider who will take your pet if you are laid-up long term. Who will be ‘legal guardian’ and what provisions have you arranged for supporting long-term care? A little planning can go a long way.
