When Richard Monfort was 21 years old, his fighter plane was shot down over France during WWII. Despite their actions, the Monfort family of Greeley wasn’t able to bring his body back to Linn Grove Cemetery to be buried in the family plot.
Then, Richard’s brother, Ken Monfort, who was a junior at CSU, flew to France in the summer with his roommate, and got on bicycles to search the huge cemetery until they found Richard’s grave. His grave is now at Linn Grove.
By the way, Kenny’s roommate who went to France with him was Roy Romer, who would one day be Governor of Colorado. Kenny’s sons, and Richard’s nephews, Richard and Charlie Monfort, are the owners of the Colorado Rockies.
Richard Monfort’s grave is one of the thousands of veteran graves at Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley.
