Ryan the CampanionBot
DU professor Mohammad Mahoor and his colleagues have been developing Ryan, a robotic companion for the elderly with dementia or depression and for kids with autism. Ryan reads human expressions, hears human speech and responds to both with an animated face as well as a voice. In addition, Ryan, the Companion Bot, has a torso with a touch screen tablet.
Dr. Mahoor’s company, DreamFace Technologies, has developed Ryan to interact with humans, assist them and be a companion. An early prototype, a teddy bear-like robot, interacts with children. Ryan, a new version of the first prototype, has a face that is an animated projection onto a face shaped mold.
In a recent study, DreamFace customized Ryan to entertain elderly assisted living residents. Ryan answered questions, narrated photo slide shows, cued up simple games to play by touch screen and even reminded residents to take their medicine.
Dr. Mahoor and his colleagues demonstrate this CompanionBot technology at the Salute to Seniors. Learn more about this fascinating technology and how it may impact the future of aging.
