Since the beginning of genealogy centuries ago, antiquarians, past genealogists, and family historians recorded their results on paper. After years of research, lots of paper and storage were required. Today, genealogy researchers and family historians use computers with family tree software or online trees with optional scanners or digital cameras to record their research.
Computers save lots of time with better organization and can search genealogy records on the Internet. There are several varieties of computers ranging from $300 to under $500: desktop, laptop or tablet. All three computer types are ideal for genealogists depending on budgets.
Backup storage methods ranging from $10 to $100 should be considered and are available with external hard drives, USB flash drives, or even cloud (Internet) storage. Scanners or digital cameras ranging from $50 to $200 can take a snapshot of the documents or photos for saving on your computer or adding to your genealogy software.
Genealogy (family tree) software is easy to use besides paper and duplication are eliminated.
There are multiple genealogy software programs available for PC and Mac computers ranging from free to $50. Besides recording ancestor names, dates, and locations, these programs have helpful features such as Internet database searches, creating family tree charts, photo albums, and various family reports, citing sources, and some view worldwide maps or have book publishing capabilities. The online family trees are now the latest trend: Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.com being the most popular with available record collections, source verification, adding photos, DNA searches, and easy to create family histories. The bottom line is technology saves time and money, and very easy to use with better organization in searching and recording your genealogy and family history.
