There are many genealogical and historical societies in the United States and each one offers unique databases, educational opportunities and sometimes discounts to subscription databases. Members also can access webinars in real time and in recorded sessions whereas nonmembers may be charged for webinar access.
If you are researching ancestors in that particular area, you will have access to local databases that may only be available through that genealogy society’s website. Some include city directories, maps, telephone books, etc. If you are able to visit in person, society members may be available to help you and guide you in your research.
Societies can offer guidance on local resources and repositories. They can offer links to other resources and records in that area in addition to the society newsletters. Many societies include a list of surnames being researched with links to the person who added that surname. A great way to connect with new relatives!
For example, the Southern California Genealogical Society offers members remote access to World Vital Records and MyHeritage Library Edition. They also have online access to Los Angeles area records.
The Illinois State Genealogical Society offers members greatly reduced fees for non-certified copies of death certificates between the years 1916-1950.
Cyndi’s List is one resource to locate genealogy societies or you can do a simple Google search. The USGenWeb.org site lists local societies by state and county.
Join both your local society and others in locales of your research focus. You will be amazed by the help you receive.
