Eric Roberts
My name is Eric Roberts, I am privileged to be the owner and director of the Griswold Home Care serving Denver communities. I have lived in the this area for most of my life, raised in the Cole neighborhood and settling in Arvada after college, where I currently make my home with my wife, Laura and our daughter Jaeda.
I am a new business owner, recently celebrating its 8-month anniversary and reflecting on how I went from an executive in the high-tech industry to a business owner in the home care industry.
I spent the majority of my career working for large corporations, starting in an aerospace company, then in a semiconductor company where I worked my way up to Director of Engineering. In early 2014, the company consolidated operations, and I found myself looking for work. Ego bruised, stressed about the future, I was not sure what to do next. Luckily, I took advantage of career counseling and the key was not to define my future by the past, be open to new opportunities and challenges, my skills and experiences were relevant in other industries.
At the same time I was contacted by franchise consultant who presented the idea of owning a business. Using a personality profile she suggested concepts including an in-home care business. As luck would have it, I had personal experience with that industry, due to assuming responsibility for my mother’s care several years ago. I had been overwhelmed with little information on how to proceed with care, medical needs and financial affairs. The kindness of the local senior community got me through that time.
My mother passed away a few years later, but that experience was a primary driver for me to choose a Griswold Home Care franchise. I found that most – if not all – of the skills and experience from previous careers are useful in running a small business with the benefit that every day I help families get to where they need to go. I have a ways to go in becoming profitable, but every day there is an opportunity to make a positive difference someone’s life.
