September is National Coupon Month. Millions of Americans grab their coupon caddies, their meticulously alphabetized three ring coupon binders and set off to score money saving deals.
Coupons are everywhere today. You get them in the mail, the Sunday paper, on the back of your receipt at the grocery store, by email and text message. If you are a credit card holder at one of the national department store chains, you receive one in your monthly statement. Now if you are like me, why pass up a great deal when I know at some point in time I will need that “I can’t live without” item because of the coupon. And since my husband and I like to dine out from time to time, I have squirreled away restaurant coupons by the dozens.
More and more Americans are using coupons to save money. In fact, statistics show that affluent consumers that make more than $70,000 a year are the highest users of coupons. And why not…in this economy, it’s not only out of necessity but the pure satisfaction of saving
money.
Not many people know the first coupon invented was by marketing genius and Atlanta businessman Asa Chandler. In 1887 he offered “certificates” to try the new soda pop which we now know as Coke. Well, I don’t need to inform you of how successful that was.
In October, we launch “50 Plus Coupon Express.” Look for money saving coupons from businesses that you, our readers, frequent. Everything from doughnut shops, to restaurants, to your favorite retail store. We welcome ideas and requests of businesses you would like to have featured with a coupon. Email Darcy50plus@yahoo.com. Happy couponing!
