SCFD Community Free Day is Monday, August 17 from 9–5 p.m. Enjoy family-friendly activities and Museum favorites, plus free admission to the temporary exhibitions Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, and Mermaids and The Power of Poison.

Desert Islands: A New Film From The Museum Archives on Tuesday, August 18 at 7 p.m. Ricketson Auditorium $8/$10. Former Museum director Alfred M. Bailey conducted fieldwork around the world, documenting it through journals, photographs, and moving images. In 1966, Bailey presented Desert Islands to an enthusiastic audience during his popular film lecture series. The Image Archives Department has produced a motion picture of Bailey’s presentation. Hosted by René O’Connell, Museum image archivist, and Robert David of Cinema Lab, who discuss the preservation and digitization of dying film.

Science Lounge: Toxic Fun on- Thursday, August 20 from 6:30–9:30 p.m. $10/$12. Enjoy a mind-expanding experience with cocktails and entertainment every 3rd Thursday, ages 21 plus. In August, dabble in toxins and dangerous concoctions. Summon your courage to venture into the exhibition The Power of Poison and make surprising discoveries at every turn. Beware stings and bites—but an elixir awaits! Drink your dram at the bar.

What Is Relativity? Einstein’s Ideas And Why They Matter. Tuesday August 27 at 7 p.m. Ricketson Auditorium,$8/$10, book sale & signing. Author and astrophysicist Jeffrey Bennett begins his accessible and entertaining introduction to Einstein’s theories by taking you on an imaginary journey to a black hole and describing the amazing phenomena that you would really experience on that trip. Get an in-depth look at how the theory of relativity shapes much of our contemporary relationship to the universe.
