Color splashes are bursting from the ground and blooming all around us. Whether you are interested in landscapes or portraits, this time of year reignites enthusiasm to get outside and take photographs.
There are so many fabulous spots around Niwot, that it is sometimes hard to know where to start. The obvious target is downtown, crammed with character and history, overflowing flowerpots and vibrant gardens. There are the panoramic views that you discover walking your dog, or out running. Finally there are tucked away, over looked places, which inspire you to capture something new.
Being a professional photographer, I have my favorites, and I’m happy to share them with you.
• Railway crossing and rail track portraits are very popular in Colorado. It is, however, not only dangerous, but also illegal to trespass on railroad property. Fortunately for us Niwotians we have the restored train carriage at Whistlestop Park. If that doesn’t quench your thirst for train related pictures, contact Boulder Valley Railway Historical Society bvrhs@bvrhs.org., for permission to photograph their collection.
• You might not automatically think of going to the Recycling Center (north of Hwy 52, on the east side of North 79th St), but accessing the Niwot Loop Trailhead there, provides a good variety of back drops for family pictures. The second bridge has intriguing structural lines to play with. The long grassy views don’t come with power lines to edit out. If you walk far enough, there is a convenient fallen tree. The texture and grain of the trunk is ideal for black and white pictures. It is also the perfect size for children to climb on, and no child I’ve met can resist the temptation. The results are gorgeous, natural, candid shots… everyone’s favorite!
• For more abstract pictures look for interesting textures, lines, shapes or patterns along the store fronts in Niwot. The weathered wood of the Firehouse Museum, along with the red-framed window, always catch my eye. Bricks, piping, pebbles can all yield interesting results. If you need inspiration, check out the latest sculptures nestled in the Osmosis Gallery garden (feel free to pop in, you always receive a warm welcome).
• If you prefer water with your mountain views, head over to Coot Lake and you won’t be disappointed. I recommend turning right on the path as you leave the small parking lot and walking towards the first bend. Looking south across the lake, you are afforded a glorious view of the Flatirons. In addition, the water reeds provide a natural frame for your pictures, throughout the summer.
Time of day obviously makes a big difference to your photographs. It is worth making the effort to get out first thing in the morning or just before sunset. This being the prime time for mosquitoes, learn from my experience and don’t forget the bug spray.
