In 1965, President Johnson signed into law the Older Americans Act (OAA) authorizing a national support network for this designated population. Coordinated by the Administration for Community Living (ALC), its nationwide services and funding enable older adults to live independently in their communities as long as they are able.
Sample services include home-delivered meals through Meals on Wheels, caregiver support, legal assistance, preventive health services, personal care and elder abuse prevention. Senior centers provide opportunities for social engagement and congregate meals.
“Get in the Act” is ALC’s theme for this May’s 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. Activity, wellness and inclusivity, ALC’s areas of focus, empower adults and their communities to honor those taking charge of their health, engaging locally and making a positive impact on the lives of others. Congratulations on this significant anniversary! This legislation and the Administration for Community Living have helped enhance the lives of many in our area.
