The Longmont Police Department received two awards, which express gratitude and appreciation for their dedication and commitment to keeping our roads and communities safe and serving Colorado’s citizens.
A law enforcement champion is an individual with outstanding contributions in the prevention and enforcement of impaired driving, traffic safety, or occupant protection. This can be demonstrated by efforts such as DUI patrols or safety belt campaigns during the established enforcement periods throughout the year. It can also be demonstrated by advanced training, drug recognition expert activity, high visibility enforcement tactics, community engagement, prevention programs, and other related activities. Over 25 police officers across Colorado received a champion award in 2023.
Longmont Police Sergeant Tyler Bartlett received the state award presented for Outstanding Individual Dedication to Investigating Impaired Driving Crashes. The award is presented by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Sergeant Eric Lewis accepted an award presented to the Longmont Police Traffic Unit for Outstanding Team Dedication to Investigating Impaired Driving Crashes by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). MADD focuses on ending impaired driving. Since the founding of the MADD organization in 1980, they have served as a lifeline for thousands of victims and survivors, and drunk driving fatalities have been cut in half. Together, we can end this 100% preventable crime.
MADD was founded in 1980 in California by Candace Lightner after her 13-year-old daughter, Cari, was killed by a drunk driver. Candace worked tirelessly to change drunk driving laws in her home state and took that momentum to the national stage where MADD held its first national press conference in 1980 in Washington, DC. Since then, many states have adopted drunk driving laws with severe penalties to stop or reduce drunk driving.
MADD provides supportive services to nearly one million drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge through local victim advocates and the 24-Hour Victim Help Line 1-877-MADD-HELP. Visit www.madd.org or call 1-877-ASK-MADD.
