…Someone in the US needs blood. More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day, and even though an estimated 38% of the population is eligible to donate only about 5% actually do.
Blood transfusions are required for patients with cancer, leukemia and other diseases, for open-heart surgery patients, and to help save the lives of accident/trauma victims. One in five hospital patients may require blood.
In 2013 North Colorado Medical Center transfused 6,500 blood products to our patients; the majority of those products were donated at our Blood Donor Center by members of our community. There is no substitute for human blood, and North Colorado Medical Center is able to provide patients with blood products when needed as part of their high quality care because of the donations of from the northern Colorado community.
