The health care industry is currently undergoing a much needed transformation. The Affordable Care Act requires that hospitals like Longmont United place a growing importance on community-wide preventative health services. Providers are moving toward a prevention-oriented model of care that promotes stronger patient/physician relationships, and encourages engaged patients.
As this change unfolds, Via continues to be an essential community resource. By providing transportation options, Via helps older adults and patients with disabilities get to doctor’s appointments, fill prescriptions and follow through on physical therapy and exercise thereby broadening the continuum of care.
From the healthcare provider’s perspective, there is a strong business case for Via. Via allows rider/patients to proactively access health care, instead of waiting until an ambulance and emergency room care are the only options. This creates a tremendous cost savings for everyone as well as improving community health.
Via’s transportation options also support community health in the broad sense. Via helps people with disabilities get to work, go grocery shopping, and remain self-sufficient. The health benefits of living a productive, independent life are beyond measure.
In view of current trends, the future need for mobility options and healthcare will become even more prevalent and closely linked. As a healthcare industry professional, I am thankful for organizations such as Via and recognize the pivotal role Via plays in keeping our community healthy.
