At its October 29,2022 meeting, the Boulder Rotary Club awarded the Jim Swaeby Peace Award to Betty Ball and LeRoy Moore, co-founders of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. Named for the late Jim Swaeby, Boulder Rotary Club member, real estate executive and former Peace Corps Volunteer, the award was started in 2019 to acknowledge people or organizations in Boulder County who advance goodwill and peace on a global basis. Previous honorees include Dorothy Rupert, Ellen Moore and Leslie Durgin.
The Club’s 2022 honorees, Betty Ball and LeRoy Moore, have been involved for decades in advancing the cause of peace. Both were present to receive the award, along with friends and family members. Each was presented with a certificate. Their names will be inscribed on a plaque and monument located in the Boulder Peace Garden next to Boulder Creek. Betty has been the backbone of
the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and is also active in the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Boulder Standing Up for Racial Justice organization.
LeRoy, a former University of Denver professor, has made it his lifelong goal to educate others on the dangers of nuclear weapons. He was involved in the non-violent demonstrations at Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant back in 1979.
