Multiple first responders from various Aurora agencies were recognized in early October with a special award for their role in saving a baby’s life. The Phoenix Award is given to first responders when they successfully save any individuals who were in cardiac arrest and who make a complete recovery from the event.
In early August, an Aurora resident found her baby unconscious and not breathing. She called 911, and an Emergency Communications Specialist with Aurora 911 provided immediate assistance followed by other first responders in saving the baby.
At Aurora Fire Rescue Station 10, leaders from Aurora 911, Aurora Police Department, Aurora Fire Rescue and Falck Rocky Mountain Ambulance presented the award to members of their staff for saving the baby.
The award recipients include Emergency Communications Specialist Julie McKay; Lt. Patrick Taylor, Capt. Joe Hill, Fire Medic Michael Wu, Engineer Dave Hamam, and Fire Medic Bryant Snow with Aurora Fire Rescue; Officer Daniel Kennicutt with Aurora Police Department; and Emergency Medical Technician Tee Than and Medic Kenneth Mackey with Falck Rocky Mountain Ambulance.
The resident and her family also attended the presentation to offer their gratitude and thank the first responders. Due to her outstanding focus and performance of CPR during a traumatic event no mother should experience, she was also honored at the ceremony with her own Phoenix Award!
