Denver Animal Protection Welcomes New Director

For the first time in a decade, a new director is leading Denver Animal Protection (DAP) in its vital mission of caring for homeless and vulnerable pets. DAP is a division of the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment. Melanie Sobel, who ran the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter in Northern California for nearly 12 years, joined DAP as their new director in August.

Melanie is credited with reshaping Santa Cruz County’s Animal Shelter program into one of the most respected animal welfare agencies in California. She helped institute a “Planned Pethood” spay/neuter program, providing these important services at low or no cost. She started a low-cost microchip program to increase the likelihood of owners reuniting with lost pets. She championed community events, including Meow Luau, St. Pittie’s Day, and an annual Parks and Rex event.

“Denver Animal Protection is nationally known for its progressive programs and policies, beautiful shelter, and supportive community. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to lead this organization! Plus, Denver is a gorgeous city and a highly desirable place to reside,” she says.

Sobel is joined in her new life in Denver by her two dogs, Luna and Simon. She adopted both from the Santa Cruz shelter. She looks forward to spending time in the great outdoors, but also enjoying all the amenities typical of large cities, like Denver, including its cultural institutions, shopping, and good restaurants.
