The Elder Care Network of Northern Colorado hosted over 380 attendees and 40 sponsors/exhibitors at the annual Senior Law Day held in August at the Hilton Hotel in Fort Collins. Seventeen business personnel including attorneys and community volunteers participated on the annual planning committee. Rikke Liska and Kate Smith are attorneys and the co-chairs for the Senior Law Day 2014 committee.
The all day event included 24 popular workshops on estate planning, fraud, real estate, long term care, legal, probate and wills, Medicare/Medicaid, and Veterans Benefits subjects taught by professionals in their field.
Over 35 volunteers supported this event in helping seniors register in the morning, navigate the class rooms and exhibit area, luncheon support, teach classes, and provide entertainment for the seniors. Many seniors attended 15 minute individual sessions with “Ask An Attorney,” another popular feature of Senior Law Day to help seniors with their personal legal issues. A luncheon was provided for the seniors, exhibitors, and volunteers. Forty sponsors provided the exhibits and funding for this event including Platinum sponsors included Colorado State University Extension and College of Health and Human Sciences, Front Range Hospice, and Good Samaritan Communities of Northern Colorado. The remaining 37 gold, silver and bronze sponsors also helped to make the event a large success for the seniors. Many exhibitors included attorneys, other legal services, county services, real estate services, funeral services, health insurance companies, retirement communities, home healthcare services, non-profit organizations for seniors, and home maintenance services.
At the end of the day, each senior or family is given the popular 500 page Senior Law Day handbook on senior related legal topics published by the staff of the Colorado Bar Association CLE. Overall, another popular Senior Law Day helps many seniors in need.
