Here are a few opportunities to get involved with Boulder County Parks & Open Space. Volunteer efforts improve our lands, keep our properties beautiful, and bring value to our cultural history programs. Here’s how you can have fun and contribute.
Ongoing Opportunities:
• Agricultural Heritage Center Tour Guide. The Agricultural Heritage Center at the Lohr/McIntosh farm represents this area’s agricultural roots and pioneer history. Volunteer tour guides and farmhouse docents teach visitors about the agricultural history of Boulder County between 1900 and 1925. There are also opportunities to assist with story time, Fun on the Farm, and other programs during the summer. For more information, please contact Jim Drew at jdrew@bouldercounty.org or 303-776-8688.
Application deadline is March 6.
• Walker Ranch Living History Demonstrator. Help visitors travel back in time to an 1880s ranch in the mountains. Learn fun and easy living history demonstrations to share at special events and weekday school field trips. It’s your chance to be a pioneer and give visitors an appreciation for the area’s past: dress in period costume, cook on a wood stove, give tours, chop wood, make shingles, churn butter, and do laundry with a washboard! For more information, please contact Sheryl Kippen at skippen@bouldercounty.org or 303-776-8848. Application deadline is March 25.
• Agricultural Heritage Center Livestock Caretaker. Livestock are a vital component of the programs at the Agricultural Heritage Center and need care twice a day, seven days a week. The primary responsibility of livestock caretakers is feeding livestock even in inclement weather conditions such as snow, rain, or extreme heat or cold. For more information, please contact Jim Drew at jdrew@bouldercounty.org or 303-776-8688. Application deadline is March 31.
• Altona School Volunteer. Volunteers lead fun educational programs at the recently restored Altona Schoolhouse at Heil Valley Ranch. Volunteers present one room school field trips and artifact trunks for pre-requested group visits; research, develop, and present future field trip or public program activities; lead period-appropriate crafts, games, and possibly songs. For more information, please contact Sheryl Kippen at skippen@bouldercounty.org or 303-776-8848. Application deadline is April 1, 2022.
• Agricultural Heritage Center Gardener. Volunteers manage the heirloom garden at the Agricultural Heritage Center at the Lohr/McIntosh Farm. Basic responsibilities include planning, planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting the garden. Optional duties include watering trees when needed and maintaining flower beds.
