Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado Celebrates National Constitution Week

Over 100 people gathered to celebrate their ‘blessings of liberty’ in September at the Pelican Lakes Resort & Golf Club. The multi-generational crowd came together to honor Constitution Day, the day the United States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado hosted the event based upon this national tradition.

The Constitution was later ratified after gaining enough public and political support for the design of a new kind of government – a democratic republic. This republic was created with the goals of vesting the power in the people, not a king, and limiting the power of government by enumerating the powers granted to government by the people. Hence, the preamble to the Constitution starts with the famous phrase ‘We the people of the United States of America…”

Master of ceremonies Allen Thomas III of Vino & Veritas Society opened the evening’s program. The Rocky Mountain Young Marines presented the colors and then led the audience in the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Several Northern Colorado Colonial Patriots including Ben Aste led the audience in singing God Bless America and then played the part of Alexander Hamilton in a colonial re-enactment called ‘It’s 1787.’

Ben Martin, former Army Ranger and West Point graduate, gave the keynote address. Winners of the Weld County Commissioner’s Constitution Day Essay & Art Contest presented their work, much to the delight of the crowd. And finally, the Young Marines led the preamble to the Constitution and then retired the colors.

The event was hosted by Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado and the Celebrating Gratitude campaign. For more information, send an email to info@celebratinggratitude.org.
