Greeley Celebrates National Historic Preservation Month

May is Historic Preservation Month, which celebrates the heritage and preservation of historical, architectural and archaeological resources significant in local, state and national development.

The U.S. first celebrated National Preservation Week in May 1973, when President Richard Nixon signed the resolution into law on May 5. The resolution states, “as the pace of change accelerates in the world around us, Americans more than ever need a lively awareness of our roots and origins in the past on which to base our sense of identity in the present and our directions for the future.”

Since that historic time, mayors and governors throughout the country, added their proclamations to President Nixon’s. To honor this annual milestone, Greeley’s City Council will read the proclamation marking May as Historic Preservation Month at their meeting on Tuesday, May 4.

The Greeley Historic Preservation Commission actively supports preserving historic properties. They pride themselves on preserving Greeley’s history by designating these properties on the Greeley Historic Register, providing financial incentives for rehabilitation work, and ensuring that characteristics that make these properties unique are preserved.
