On April 25, Dr. Cameron Camp, an internationally-known research scientist in the field of gerontology, visits Greeley to train the staff of WindSong at Northridge in the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® approach to dementia care.
Dr. Camp saw commonalities between Maria Montessori’s method of teaching children and his research in dementia intervention. His research has shown that a retooling of Montessori’s concepts benefit people in all stages of life, even with cognitive impairment.
In the 25 years since his research began, Dr. Camp has lectured and trained in Asia, Australia, Europe, and throughout North America. His writings have been translated into many different languages. He recently served as President of the Division of Adult Development and Aging of the American Psychological Association.
The practical application of Dr. Camp’s principles affirms that persons with dementia can be led by building experiences and external cues to help them “remember” in a way. Even new learning can occur over time. With the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® approach, individuals with dementia are able to retain their dignity and independence.
Through the Montessori method, WindSong works to create a community that is centered on residents’ needs and previous lifestyles. They capitalize on each individual’s strengths, and utilize those strengths together to create an environment where a community of people with dementia can once again be active participants in their own lives. Rather than negatively restricting what dementia residents can do, WindSong staff seek for their residents the highest level of independence possible.
WindSong presents a free session, open to the public with Dr. Camp on April 25 at 6:30pm at the Greeley Country Club at 4500 W. 10th Street in Greeley. Refreshments are served. Please RSVP at (970) 449-7199 or email lrc@ windsongmemorycare.com.
