The year 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of Longmont’s founding. In honor of this sesquicentennial, Longmont Museum Curator of History Erik Mason has written a new book —” Longmont: The First 150 Years.”
Through text and nearly 300 historic photographs, the book shares a comprehensive history of the St. Vrain Valley and tells the stories of the many people who have called the area home. Readers will discover Longmont’s origins as the Chicago-Colorado Colony, its development as a hub for agriculture—including flour mills, a vegetable cannery, and a sugar factory —and the transition to today’s high-tech center.
“Longmont has a rich history, with so many fascinating characters and events,” said author Erik Mason. “I am thrilled to see this book come out and highlight their stories.”
Mason, widely considered the expert on Longmont’s history, has worked at the Longmont Museum for more than 20 years. As the Curator of History, he is responsible for preserving the Museum’s historic object and archival collections, numbering nearly 16,000 objects.
“Longmont: The First 150 Years” is now available for sale for $39.95 online at longmontmuseum.org or in the Museum’s Gift Shop at 400 Quail Road. It is also available to borrow through the Longmont Library.
