Protect Your Pets from the Cold!

Winter is Here!

Every animal is an individual, and cold winter weather poses different risks to different animals. Our Animal Protection & Control team receives many calls during the cold-weather months regarding animals left outdoors. Here are some of the considerations our officers take into account when evaluating appropriate conditions for animals outdoors, and recommend that you consider as well:

1) Breed: Large dog breeds like Huskies or German shepherds may tolerate cold temperatures better than small dogs with thin coats.
2) Age: Senior pets, very young animals, and sick animals may not be able to regulate their body temperatures as well as healthy animals.
3) Shelter: Shelters that protect animals from the wind, rain, and snow can help them stay safe and warm. Check if the animal has a sturdy, insulated shelter to protect them from the elements.
4) Even in the sun, a wintery day can be cold and uncomfortable for animals. If it’s too cold for you, it may be too cold for your pet.
