University of Northern Colorado’s Opera Theatre is presenting Changing The Narrative, a season that celebrates women and feminism accumulating a spring production of Virgil Thomson’s The Mother of Us All. Starting off the season is an opera festival weekend including the world premiere of The Taming, based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, composed by UNC’s own Dr. Paul Elwood and libretto by Brian Luedloff, and The Proposal, by American composer Milton Granger. This festival of works is November 22nd through 24th in the new performance hall in the Campus Commons.
“It’s refreshing to be able to pick a season with a continuing theme throughout, and I couldn’t be more excited to change the narrative for this particular story,” said Luedloff, who is the author of The Taming’s libretto and stage director. “Paul and I had an amazing time creating The Taming, and seeing what the students do with this brand new music will be an intriguing experience.”
UNC Opera Theatre students also have the advantage of performing in the new Campus Commons Performance Hall. Completed in 2019, the new hall is now home to UNC student and faculty performances. All 3 works are from the 20th and 21st century, so students have an opportunity to take characters that are unique and truly make them their own.
The Taming and The Proposal are on Nov. 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 on Sunday. For information visit unco.edu or call 970-351-4849. For more information about these productions, please contact Brian Luedloff, at brian.luedloff@unco.edu.
