June Guided Hikes and Programs on Larimer County Open Spaces
Participate in the Second Annual Land Conservation Appreciation week, a week-long celebration of all the wonderful work done to protect the special places that make Colorado a phenomenal place to live, work and play.
Wednesday, June 5 “Nature Notes Club” – Join the Nature Notes Club for their June meeting. You’ll get the chance to journal in the vein of Leopold or Muir with this fun group of people. This program will be stationary, with some easy walking. Approximately 3 hour program. Please dress appropriately for the weather, and bring along all of your journaling supplies. Nature Notes meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, usually during the day. Contact Heather at (970) 679-4489 for more details, such as time and location.
Thursday, June 6 at 9:00 a.m. “Hermit Park Treasure Hunt” – It’s free day at Hermit Park Open Space, and we’re celebrating with a treasure hunt! Discover all the treasures of the area: camping, cabin rentals, wildflowers, wildlife, hiking and the history of this unique gem of the Estes Valley. Activities will be held between 9:00 am and 4:00pm. Hermit Park Open Space is located off Hwy 36 just east of Estes Park. Program is free. No registration required. Saturday, June 8 at 9:00 a.m. “Get Outdoors Day” – This national event celebrates America’s great outdoors. Bring the whole family to Spring Canyon Park, located at 2626 W. Horsetooth Rd. in Fort Collins, to try new ways to get outdoors, and learn where to go! Come out anytime between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Please direction questions to Heather at (970) 679-4489.

Monday, June 10 at 10:00 a.m. “Tiny Trekkers” – Join Larimer County Naturalists for a special program designed for your toddler and you. This program at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland, off of Hwy 34, will be a morning filled with crafts, stories and fun facts! A parent or guardian must accompany the child for this hour long program. After the program, feel free to explore the open space with your child! Program is free. No registration required. Saturday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m. “Messages in Stone at Devil’s Backbone” – Take a short hike with Naturalist Ed through millions of years of geologic history visible in and near Devils Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland off Hwy 34. Learn key geologic ideas and how they help reveal the stories in the rocks of this prominent landmark. The hike will be about 90 minutes and about 1 mile in length. Hike rating: easy. Meet at the shelter on the south side of the parking lot. Program is free, but registration is required. Please go to www.larimer.org/NRregistration to sign up. Saturday, June 15 at 11:00 a.m. “Camping Clinic at Jax” – New to the area or looking to dust off the old tent? Bring the whole family out to Jax Outdoor Gear, 1200 N. College Ave. in Fort Collins, for this introduction to camping skills, including camping gear, what to do around wildlife and how to avoid camping catastrophes. Program is free. This informal opportunity to visit with an elected official will give you the chance to ask anything you’d like about the county in a spectacular outdoor setting. Come on out and get to know Tom and Kerri! Hike rating: Easy. Please bring water for the trail and dress appropriately for the weather. Approximately 2 hour program.
