November 7th marked the beginning of a new chapter in Volunteers of America Colorado’s 122- year history; David K. Schunk assumed the position of CEO and President succeeding Dianna Kunz who served for more than 25 years.
“Volunteers of America Colorado is a strong and vibrant organization filled with caring employees who take pride in helping the state’s vulnerable populations. I feel fortunate and excited to join an organization whose incredible work I have admired so much over the years,” Schunk expressed.
Schunk was previously Chief Financial Officer for another leading non-profit organization, the Denver Rescue Mission (DRM). He volunteered there by regularly and has made numerous mission trips. He has also sat on the board of several non-profit organizations including Save Our Youth and DRM.
During nearly 8 years at DRM, he participated in strategic leadership and directed all Administrative functions, plus lead several strategic real estate development projects. Prior to DRM, he served in a variety senior management positions at companies including IHS, Intelligent Electronics, Verio/ NTT, GE Technology Services, and StorageTek. He also founded and/or profitably grew small businesses in IT, manufacturing, event services and private equity during this time.
Schunk holds his MBA from the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Colorado.
“Volunteers of America Colorado been delivering high quality services in the most compassionate manner to the most vulnerable individuals throughout Colorado for a very long time,” Schunk stated. “In this role, while I have still a lot to learn about the breadth and depth of this organization, I’d like to see Volunteers of America Colorado sustain and grow the ministry of service legacy that has been built here for the last 122 years.”
Kunz continues to work for Volunteers of America until Schunk is fully acclimated in his new position. She stated, “We are lucky to have found an individual with a strong set of leadership skills as well as a shared passion for service to the individuals and families served by Volunteers of America.”
Schunk is a father of three and has lived in Colorado for most of life. He currently resides in Denver with his wife, Kathy, and his golden retriever. In his free time, he enjoys all things outdoors, and recently completed a backpacking trip down the Grand Canyon.
Schunk brings the same adventurous enthusiasm to his new role as president and CEO and is eager to expand Volunteers of America’s ‘church without walls,’ which focuses on service and giving. Learn more at www.voacolorado.org.
