Dina Carson presents A Dark & Stormy Genealogy No Longer: Becoming a Good Story Teller:

Although we’d all like to write the next great American family history, few of us find it easy. The key is in learning a few tips from fiction and a few more from creative non-fiction–when to use them and when not to–to make the story of your family come to life and keep the reader engaged from beginning to end. If discussing points of view leaves you queasy, and determining plot points leaves you puzzled, here’s a roadmap from rambling to readable. Research is the root of good storytelling, so you already have the building blocks for great stories. A few quick and simple tips will get you churning out chapters your relatives will read.

Dina Carson is an active member of the Boulder Genealogical Society. She is editor of our Quarterly and chief organizer of the 1890 Census Replacement Project. Dina was named the 2013 winner of the society’s Distinguished Service Award recognizing her many contributions made to BGS and the genealogy community. Although her formal education is in international law and economics, she has spent the last 20 years marketing books and small businesses.
