The holidays are over and we’re all well on our way to putting our New Year’s resolutions into action, so perhaps it’s time to help our furry little friends do the same. I’m sure they’re raring to go, and with a bit of our help, they can pull it off. Here are our top five New Year’s resolutions for pets.
1. Measure your pet’s food every time you feed him. If your pet has to lose weight chances are your veterinarian has told you how much food to feed. In general, the amounts suggested on the bag are more than what most dogs need to eat to maintain a healthy weight. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. He or she should be the first source of information for your dog’s nutritional needs.
2. Resolve to exercise or play with your pet daily. Consider taking up a new dog sport, or adding more fun play time inside or outside with your pet. If the exercise will be strenuous check with your vet first to make sure your furry friend can handle it.
3. Visit your veterinarian and have your pet examined. Annual vaccines may not be necessary but annual examinations are necessary to identify problems early. While you are there, be sure to discuss the diet and exercise requirements of your pet. Don’t forget to discuss oral care. Most pets have some degree of dental disease and it is possible you may need instruction in tooth brushing and general dental hygiene for your pet.
4. Consider a well balanced nutritional supplement to support your pet’s dietary needs. There are many supplements available for your pets to provide a longer and healthier life.
5. If you don’t currently have a pet, adopt one from the shelter or a local rescue group. There are a number of older dogs and cats awaiting a forever home. Many of these animals make super pets and are over the chewing and house training frustrations that occur with puppies.
Resolve to make 2014 the best year ever for you and your pet!
Health, and happiness to all our readers and their 2 and 4 footed friends!
