To mark its 25th Anniversary, the Union Colony Civic Center not only has an outstanding lineup of entertainment, but plans special events throughout the year.
The Greeley Chamber of Commerce hosts a special Business After Hours at the UCCC on Thursday, October 10, from 5-7 p.m. “The Chamber usually has their Business After Hours the last Thursday of each month,” explained Mark Briemhorst, Culture Superintendent, “but this is special to recognize the 25th Anniversary.” Chamber members are admitted free; there is a $20 charge for non-members.
Saturday, October 19 brings a very special event to the UCCC. Renowned photographer John Fielder opens an exhibition at the Tointon Gallery for the Visual Arts entitled “Colorado’s Great Outdoors: Celebrating 20 Years of Lottery Funded Lands”. This exhibit is sponsored by Great Outdoors Colorado, and runs until Saturday, December 14. “With this exhibit, which is traveling around the state, the Tointon Gallery commissioned Mr. Fielder to shoot new photos in Greeley, to add to and “localize” the show,” said Greeley Public Art Coordinator Kim Snyder. The local photos are added to the touring exhibit.
As part of the exhibit opening, there is a reception at 5 p.m. on October 19, in conjunction with a Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra concert later that evening. All 13 of Fielder’s books, calendars and publications are available for purchase at the reception, and Fielder is available to sign them. The concert, “A Tour of Eastern Europe,” is set for 7:30 p.m. and includes a slide show highlighting some of Fielder’s photography. Also in the Tointon Gallery from October 19 to December 14 is an exhibit featuring historical photos and memorabilia from Greeley’s past, plus items from Greeley’s sister city, Moriya, Japan. The Tointon Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., accessible through the Greeley Rec. Center entrance, and is also open via the lobby during performances.
In addition, four special events geared toward Northern Colorado youth. The Spotlight on Youth series begins Monday, November 11 at 6:30 p.m. with a special collaboration of the UCCC, Greeley/Weld School District 6 and the University of Northern Colorado. This Spotlight on Youth Choir Concert features the ‘N Tune middle school choir from Chappelow K-8 Arts Magnet Middle School, the Greeley Central High School Chamber Choir, and the UNC Concert Choir, performing individually and combined on the Monfort Concert Hall stage.
The second of three collaborations, the Union Colony Civic Center presents the Spotlight on Youth Band Concert on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. Instrumentalists from the Chappelow K-8 Arts Magnet Middle School Advanced Band, the Greeley Central Band and the UNC Concert Band join forces for an evening of music you’ll definitely want to see and hear! Tickets for both of these events are $5 for all seats.
On Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 4 p.m., the Greeley Philharmonic revives its popular Children’s and Family Concert with a performance of “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. The concert is narrated by an astronaut from NASA. This musical journey through the galaxy is sponsored by Thrivent Financial.
The final Spotlight on Youth event is Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 4 p.m., when the UCCC hosts the Greeley Children’s Chorale for their “Spring Sing”. The Children’s Chorale’s concert repertoire spans a variety of styles, from classical to jazz, pop to foreign language texts. This is the final concert of the Greeley Children’s Chorale season, before they head to Boston on concert tour. Tickets for this concert are $5 for Children, $10 for adults.
