Did you know that although as we age and dementia and Alzheimer’s may take over our minds, there is one very important thing that we seem to hold on to and that is music. Music is the heart and soul of so many elders. I am amazed every day at how many of my elders in our community cannot remember life day to day but I can start a song and my elders will smile and sing along. Those that can’t remember words still smile and tap along. Music may bring joy, sorrow, memories of a dance; Music has a spark in all of us somewhere. I encourage you to try a song when you visit a loved one who cannot remember. Simple songs, Hymns, Elvis, Johnny Cash, the list is endless. When you see a gleam of happiness you yourself won’t help but sing along and find a smile on your own face.
Sing and dance. Bring joy, happiness and wellness to an elder.
